Rogue Beginnings 2 (Puppy 2)-

As your puppy grows older you may begin to notice some changes. Your puppy no longer sits when you ask, or may not “hear” you when you call. This is because your puppy is entering adolescence. Adolescence is the time when everything you think your puppy knows can start to fall apart and you may no longer be the most important thing in your puppy’s world as he begins to notice squirrels, dogs, interesting smells or anything else that may capture his attention. Maintaining your dog’s socialization and training through adolescence can be frustrating for you and your puppy if you don’t know what to expect and how to deal with it. This is a critical time for your dog’s development and why we developed many of our training classes. For more information on Adolescence please read: http://dogtime.com/dog-health/general/1498-puppy-adolescence-dunbar,

This class is for puppies that are fully immunized and generally 16-28 weeks old at the start of class. This class features enhanced socialization and introducing relaxation around distractions with structured off leash play. We will also help you prepare for adolescence by training proactively, working on impulse control and building basic manners. By taking this class you will be well on your way to a well-mannered pup!

Specialty Classes-

Cooperative Care: Level 1-

WHY TRAIN FOR COOPERATIVE CARE?

Cooperative care involves training an animal to not only tolerate handling and husbandry procedures, but to be an active, willing participant in these experiences.

Research has shown that the benefit of having a sense of control over unpleasant events applies not only to humans, but to all animals. Teaching an animal that they can have some control in such situations can reduce their stress and fear, and increase their confidence and tolerance for handling during veterinary exams or procedures, grooming, or handling they might otherwise find unpleasant. Additionally, while it may seem counter-intuitive to allow this kind of agency—many people assume that giving an animal a sense of control would just result in the animal refusing to participate in the unpleasant experience—the opposite is true when cooperative care is properly trained: Animals taught using cooperative care training willingly participate in unpleasant events.

How does your dog react to nail trims?  Does he let you brush his teeth without complaint?  Can the groomer handle him with ease?  Are vet visits enjoyable?  By using cooperative care we can make these procedures as pleasant and stress free as possible.  In this class we will lay the foundations and show you how to start working on the exercises with your dog. We will build on these foundations in the next levels of class.

One of the most important aspects of teaching cooperative care is that the animal is allowed to “say no.”  In class we will teach them how they can indicate using a non-aggressive, safe behavior that they need a break. Our ultimate goal is to have dogs who are relaxed and calm for procedures that will benefit their health and well-being.  This class is appropriate for dogs of all ages and at all levels of training.  Sometimes even very highly trained performance dogs have issues with being handled in certain ways.
